I'm not sure what's going to happen if you try to write a 5.25" DD disc in an HD only drive. It's a bit more straightforward with 3.5" discs as they have an extra HD hole so the drive can detect DD vs HD media and set the data rate accordingly. With 5.25" discs, there's no distinguishing feature between the two densities. Possibly it's the software, ie. Omniflop, which copes with it all.
I do have new sealed boxes of DD discs:

but we don't want to risk going to that expense (though 1st November would be a good time buy) if it might not work. I also have a plentiful supply of new unbranded DD 5.25" discs for general use, I can post 2 or 3 to you for the cost of postage, and format them in advance if needed, to see if it works.
