general • Linux - emulators and tools for Elk and Beeb

As I don't want to splash out yet on a new PC when the support for Windows 10 ends in a years' time to run Windows 11, I thought I would start to investigate using Linux on my home laptop (which does not meet all of MSs hardware requirements for Windows 11), and setup it for retro emulation e.g. for Electron, Beeb (and DOS).

My favourite distribution is Linux Mint, and have it running on an old laptop which is connected to my hifi.

For the Elk, I see there are versions of Elkulator for Linux, but I guess I'll have to compile it. Haven't complied anything on Unix since the early 90's, so it'll be an experience. I also see there are several versions out there, so which is the best to go for?

For the Beeb, my preference has been BeebEm, as I discovered this first and is familiar with it, but the development of this for Linux seems to have stopped in 2007 for Linux. Then there is B-Em, I played a bit with it on Windows, but it does has a version for Linux so I'll be going this way.

Programming, I have been using Notepad++ with BBC Basic plugin, is there something similiar for Linux? It some point I would like to use beebasm as well. I see that it is portable, but haven't found instructions for using it under Linux.

DOS, well I'll use DOSBox, just want to find a nice frontend like D-Fend Reloaded.

Any pointers are gratefully welcomed.
