Monitor Definition files.
As you said, these MDFs normally hide away on the HD.
I've had this problem in the past, too. What I've now done, is extract a couple of useful files, and put them on to a floppy.
The two most generally useful ones, I've found to be the Acorn AKF60 and AKF85 (the big tube one).
So long as you're using RO 3.7 or newer, you might find that changing the frame rate (where applicable) may shift the picture left or right a bit. Both of these seem to work with a variety of LCD screens that I have.
If anyone's interested, I've now got a few Widescreen LCD MDFs, two of which seem to work with a wide range of LCD screens - at least on the 5 LCD screens I have at home!
I'm not sure how I could share/upload these MDFs here - any help would be appreciated
