The disk drive interface is a subset of the Shugart Associates system.
Each drive or device has its own ID. The BBC B can control up to two drives / devices. DS0 and DS1.
Inside most 5¼" drives there will be links/jumper shunts to select between DS0, DS1, DS2, or DS3 (Drive/Device Select 0, 1, 2 or 3). Single drives are normally set to the first, DS0. If you want this drive to be the second drive, move the link/jumper shunt from the DS0 position to the DS1 position.
It's similar for most Goteks.
It's important to understand that each drive/device must have a different ID.
But keep in mind that some may only have positions for DS0 and DS1. It's also not helped by some drives counting from 1 instead of zero (using DS1, DS2, DS3 and DS4).
The 5¼" drive will already have terminating resistors. Because of this, I recommend the 5¼" drive goes on the end of the data cable. With the Gotek connected to the middle connector on the cable. The cable is normal straight through ribbon cable, but fitted with the correct type of IDC connectors. Hence is now considered a custom cable. But you can make them up yourself if you buy the correct parts. Note, a cable for an IBM PC is not suitable because it has some wires twisted.
The power cable can also be made. But you will find it easier to get someone to make one for you.
The BBC B should have no problems powering both simultaneously.
