So the game is Acnean Mutoids (keeping the the title of the thread vague for a bit as part of the fun of Colin Hoad's video series is not knowing what's coming).
I think we can safely say the game is not great, but I'd at least like to try and understand what the dev had in mind.
Basically there's a maze, you move around it one square at a time by pressing U, D, L or R (literally, despite their keyboard position!)
You start on the far left, your objective is to find a key, which lets you reach a computer on the right hand side.
On any 'turn', 3 things may happen, seemingly by chance:
1) You come across a 'weapon', which can be anything from laser cannons to a banana. As Colin learnt, you must type 'Y' to actually pick it up. Not 'YES'.
2) You encounter an Acnean Mutoid. It starts 3 paces away (sometimes 2), and it will advance. Effectively you get 3 chances to stop it. Each time you can choose any weapon to try on it.
The weapon might scare the monster away in which case continue playing
The weapon might destroy the monster (so far I've only managed to actually do that with a laser cannon) and you can continue
If the monster reaches you and you have weapons, it will steal one but you can continue.
If the monster reaches you and you have no weapons, you lose.
3) You encounter the Gromnic. This monster steals all your weapons immediately leaving you defenceless. Bumping into it is pretty much a death sentence.
As well as the key and the computer, there are 2 other things on the map. The 'matter disassembler' lets you remove a single wall piece from the map. Not clear if it has any impact on the random encounters with monsters or not. Scattered around are a bunch of 'energy' objects which appear to just give you points.
Where it gets weird is if you reach the computer. It lets you put in a self destruct time of your choosing. Once the time is up, the ship explodes and it says you win. And that appears to be it. So open questions.
Can you do anything after you set the self destruct timer other than roam around?
Does getting back to the start do anything? (haven't managed it yet)
Do the weapon names have any meaning. Does using anything have some fixed chance of working or is there strategy involved?
Are there any controls or features beyond what I've described?
Can the Gnomic be countered in any way?
