Funnily enough I was just watching Fred Harris on Youtube showing Speech and it got me wondering - how on earth did the bog-standard BBC pull this off? I know nothing about the BBC's sound chip but I thought it was just chip capable of producing square waves.

How on earth did it do speech? Was the sound chip able to play basic samples similar to the C64's SID chip?
