off-topic • Re: Creating a virtualised copy of an old PC

Instead of spinriting the bad drive why not clone it onto a new(ish) 100% healthy working drive
Yes, would probably be the better option, but in all honestly, apart from taking a backup of it like I did, I don't really want to encourage her to put the old machine on ever again, really. I might not even give it back to her. The last thing I need her doing is using it and getting two systems out of sync with each other. I'm going to encourage her to use the new PC now I've set it up with mailwasher which she seems to like using, and we'll leave it at that.

I've got a backup of the virtual machine on my PC too, so if she ever mucks it up somehow I have a copy, so that's quite safe really. She also backs up her PC to an external HDD, so I'll try to make sure it backs up the virtual machine along with all her MP3s, photos, etc., and then there's an extra layer of security.

It was more about wondering how much life is left for that drive, and maybe it's better off not knowing. It's strange how a 2TB drive would be so terrible at working reasonably though.
