Literally just did this one myself (I did have a single 18650 Li-ion with diode and resistor).Another option is to replace the clock chip with the Necroware clock module.

Removing the original chip was "challenging". It would be easy if I didn't want to keep it intact (I could have just chopped all the legs off), but I wanted to do it properly, so took ages!
Just don't forget the 10k pull-up resistor between pin 1 and 24 to put the BQ3285 into Motorola mode.
I'm slowly building up a little box of original parts, I'll have two machines soon!
