If I try to mount drive 1, and wait for the Drive not ready error, then if I issue a SCSI stop unit to the current drive, I get a disc error 4 straight away. If I then do a *BYE, I get no error.
If I issue a SCSI start unit to the current drive, then I also get a disc error 4 straight away. If I then do *MOUNT 1 again I get the Drive not ready error after the 2 and a bit mins the Adaptec controller/ADFS waits.
So I do strongly suspect that *BYE is getting drive not ready errors and ignoring them, whereas *MOUNT can't ignore them because it then needs to read from the drive to complete the mounting process.
