Introduce Yourself • Hi from Australia

Hi

I've not had much to do with the Beeb since the early 80s when I ran the Acorn division of Barson Computers in Australia; but I am back in the thick of it, as if I never left. Brian Cockburn was my first hire in Melbourne, though I was never sure who was the boss!

I am writing an authorised biography of Acorn Computers through to its development of the ARM. This charts the story from the early influences of Sinclair through the Cambridge Processor Unit days to Acorn’s rise and transition to ARM and Element 14.

I am drawing on a variety of sources including Hermann Hauser, Chris Curry, Andy Hopper, Steve Furber, Sophie Wilson, Joe Dunn, Chris Turner, Brian Cockburn, Kim Spence Jones and many others.

This is very much a book about the people involved and where their lives went after that time in the 80s. I hope to include as many of the protagonists as possible. People from Acorn, from 3rd party organisations (e.g. the BBC, Watford Electronics, Acorn User, etc.) and users young and old. What did the Acorn mean to you? How did the Computer Literacy Project affect your life?

This is about people, not technology, though there will be a bit of that. I want to focus here on the stories about how people created them and how people used them.

This project is very much a team effort, so any comments or suggestions you would like to make will be appreciated.

Feel free to send me private messages if you prefer.

I look forward to hearing from you.
