Thats how I intepreted the difference between "CMOS unreadable" and "CMOS checksum fail". Thank you for confirming.
I've checked connectivity and values of the I2C pullups R2 and R3 and I believe that is all correct.
I managed to get a trace of the I2C bus but I'm still working on the decode function. Its a new scope to me. Its a PC USB one and the software isn't great.
I'll keep at it trying a the decode function but at the moment I haven't noticed any difference between the results with the CMOS chip in-place or when it is not.
