I do think the set of enjoyable older games is much much smaller than the set of nostalgia driven comfort zone games. The big thing for me is responsive controls. Without nostalgia, if a game controls poorly it's a miserable experience. But if it does there's plenty of fun to be had.
For example I really enjoyed working out Spooksville last year. The collision detection was harsh but I always felt like I could do something about it because when I pressed a button, the game actually did what I expected.
