Some dithering can be ok on the beeb, it works ok for a couple of the ghosts in my pacman.
The B+ has 12K sideways ram in the B+ 64.
I certainly feel sideways ram is reasonable for a modern BBC game.
The strength of the Master/compact is being able to double buffer a full screen.
There are many different types of sideways ram and in general they are best treated as ROM that you can choose which ROM is in them.
Could you use a different background colour/border for each player?
