You can indeed connect your Atari-style joysticks.
Back in the day, you could get device which plugged into the parallel printer port, and could connect two joysticks. The kit came with software to configure the joysticks to emulate the mouse or various keys (some games supported joysticks themselves). This device was made by 'The Serial Port', who then changed their name to 'Vertical Twist'. Have a look out for that on eBay etc.
Later on, there were various home-brew adapters to achieve the same, especially once 'gamepads' (Sega, and even then PlayStation) became popular.
There was also another similar product by RTFM, which plugged into the Econet socket, but I think only supported a single stick.
