32-bit acorn hardware • formatting a 1GB CF card to <512MB

I have one of the lesser-spotted DT Software 16 bit IDE podules (yr 1992) fitted to the back of my A3000 and thought I would now add an extra CF card. I bought a new 1 GB card but failed to appreciate that I couldn't partition it (DT's software did not provide for this), and formatting predictably failed using the default parameters read by DT's IDEFormE app.

I am content with using half of the capacity, in deference to the RISC OS 3.1 limit of 512 MB, and I seem to have successfully formatted it by reducing the number of reported cylinders by just over half. It works and passes verification. My question is, is this a safe and reliable method? I wouldn't want to end up further down the road with corrupted data!

I have searched the forum and there's a wealth of information on all things IDE, but I couldn't find a mention of this particular trick.
