There are a huge amount of NEAL evidence cassettes floating around. For computer use there's really no point in getting hi-fi quality tape, but ... the mechanism of the cassette is more important, the slip sheets, the head contact sponge and spring, the concentricity of the hubs and the guide rollers, the shell being screwed together vs. ultrasonically welded etc. The evidence cassettes are well made, they just have lo-fi, strong tape inside them. So, what cheap tapes should I buy off eBay for testing? The super cheap ferrics (Maxell UR90) I used for testing the record and replay on Beebs really falls off sharply at around 7kHz, they behave similarly to police evidence/court transcription cassettes.
