I think the same was probably true for a few entries in the Superior canon - that they were just too ambitious or demanding of the players.
I think you're right. I reckon there's another factor as well - Exile. Once I bought it and started exploring, I was no longer really that interested in buying anything else - and I don't think I was capable of being impressed by another new game until people started creating them in recent times.

I feel I should put in a few good words for Bonecruncher and Spellbinder though. I think they are both excellent (because I played them before Exile!). Bonecruncher is quite good fun as a puzzler but I find I can't figure out how to get past a certain screen - about the 5th or 6th. I wonder if I'm playing a version which has a bug. Spellbinder absolutely needs a pencil and paper to make a map and to figure out the spells. I can see it might not be too much fun playing on your own, but if you have someone you can work alongside it's fun. Well, it was back in the day anyway; it probably hasn't aged well.
