Have you tried the 'turbo' mode: Ctrl + Caps Lk + 2? As you have an ElkSD, it's really handy for making the menu load faster and makes Imogen and Zalaga much nicer to play. Some games go waay to fast tho. Turbo stays on until Break is pressed and it goes back to normal.
Can't believe you had 4 dead chips in that machine, so unlucky! I really didn't think the ROM would be a gonner, but really interested that it tested bad. I've used a Atmel AT28C256 in a simple adapter to replace the ROM in my machine with my simple Diag ROM (https://github.com/moogway82/ElkWSS-DiagROM) - it just needs a couple of signals swapped to work and it's a flash chip so easy to program.
