Soft modding Xbox #OG is/was very simple. You need two bits of hardware and an original game (one with a save game exploit).
I used an action replay USB to Xbox memory card adapter (but you can mod an old gamepad) and a PATA IDE port that supports locking. I use an old PC but there are compatible USB to PATA bridges.
I use the splinter cell original disk but there are others
Boot the game, load the hacked save, save the EEprom contents including the key to lock your upgraded HDD.
You can attempt hot swap to lock a bigger HDD but I have always used a PC.
You don't need a CD-ROM you can boot the Linux Xbox tools from a USB stick if your bios supports it.
